Remembering my travels to the small, mysterious Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, I think of prayer flags and the hopefulness they portray. Prayer flags flutter like brightly-colored birds as the wind blows through them, carrying wishes of peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom throughout the world. I am also reminded of the feelings of isolation and loneliness as seen in the desert landscapes of northern Namibia; my heart is breaking for the suffering of the people of Ukraine.

The war in Ukraine demonstrates the importance of interconnectivity in these dark times. Caring for this human crisis calls for cooperative mobilization and communal stewardship. This is the time, as Toni Morrison suggested, that we artists must go to work.

I am a psychologist and artist who strives to find peace in the wake of collective trauma and explore the possibilities of transformation and repair in our most difficult world.

“Hope is the thing with feathers-

That perches in the soul-

And sings the tune without the words-

And never stops-at all.”

~ Emily Dickinson
