Written in the 10th century, during Sei Shonagon's stay, as a lady-in-waiting to Empress Theishi, at the imperial court of Heian Kyo, today's Kyoto, Sei Shonagon writes in the "zuihitsu" style, "the brush moving with the mind", hence resulting in an intimate, sensitive book with a soft and melancholic sadness.
